Mets closer Jeurys Familia underwent successful surgery Friday for a blood clot in his armpit area. He has been placed on the 10-day disabled list.
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson told reporters Familia is facing a several month absence, but could return before the end of the season.
Familia gave up four runs (three earned) Wednesday night in the ninth inning to blow a 3-2 lead.
The injury to Familia leaves the Mets with just seven pitchers currently in their bullpen. Addison Reed will serve as closer while Familia recovers.
Injuries have been a massive problem for the Mets this season with Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz, Lucas Duda and Yoenis Cespedes all having missed significant time.
Gray missed time down the stretch due to a strained trapezius and a strained right forearm, but has since recovered to full health. The announcement is a blow to Team USA’s already weak starting pitching staff, headlined by Marcus Stroman and Chris Archer.
Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin was also told he couldn’t participate in the WBC with Team Canada because of insurance company issues. Athletics left fielder Khris Davis and reliever Liam Hendriks also pulled out of the Classic due to scheduling issues.
